Have you recently missed a very important job opportunity or a job promotion?  Just because you were not prepared well or because the competition was too intense.

Talented candidates sometimes get rejected as they are not able to showcase their skills and experience during their crucial interviews, simply because they could not reflect their fitment of skills and experience related to the job description and what the interviewer is looking for.

If you feel that your career is not moving ahead or your current performance is not up to the mark, there is a way to get out of this, but it may require the help of a professional to get there.

But before that lets understand, why some people fail at developing their potential than others.

Self- awareness can allow you to make better judgments and allow you to have more control and flexibility over your reactions to events.

Talented professionals are able to recognize their strengths & weakness quickly and consistently, enabling them to positively change their behaviors as per situations.

Do a self assessment in the following actions:

  1. “ I had to take over the job, because Rakesh really had no idea what he was doing”

Rakesh did know whats his job , but you wanted to be in control. You find fault in smaller things and behind the scene, you are missing out on bigger things.

2. “I don’t know why they think I am over aggressive”

Yes, you are over aggressive and you don’t know it. You have no sense what you do that makes people say that you are over aggressive

3. “Yes but…”

When you hear someone making an excuse using this phrase, they are not interested in listening from others.

In your mind you are always right and there is a perfect reason for why you are right and everyone else doesn’t get it.

If your answer is ’yes’ to most actions above, you need to work on your self-awareness .

Lack of motivation & enthusiasm are the 2 main reasons people fail to perform to the best of their abilities.

It often happens that you have desire and interest, but you lack motivation. This is a very frustrating situation, on one hand you want to achieve something but cannot get enough inner strength and motivation to act.

Do a small self assessment for yourself :

  1. I’m unsure of my ability to achieve the goals I set for myself
  2. When an unexpected event threatens or jeopardizes my goal, I tend to walk away and set new goal

If your answer is Yes to the above, you need to work on your motivation and enthusiasm

  1. You don’t know , what you want !

Do you really know what you want? Most people think that they do, but in reality they do not!

Jobs are not just jobs to earn money only, they are also the medium of personal development, serving the community and achieve the purpose of our goals.

An ideal career path is , when you utilize your potential to the max. , do work you are highly passionate about and gives you maximum personal satisfaction.

But in reality there are turns our career take in between and we are not whats the right direction.

A career coach is the one who not only helps you to reach your career goals but to determine what career goals are in the first place.

  1. Your career path is not clear to you

The ability to create a successful career path is a unique combination of Skills , mindset and abilities . Some careers , like Army , have defined career path which a person can follow to achieve success.

But there are many career paths , like Sales , Marketing , HR etc. are not well defined and require different set of thinking to achieve your goals.

A seasoned career coach can help you to connect to your inner knowingness to identify and explain many different ways to reach both your immediate and long term goals.

While it may look an easy task , but requires deep understanding of different careers , job functions and industries . It requires skills to project future opportunities (and challenges) and to make you aware of skill sets needed in future.

       3. You don’t know your own potential

  1. This is one of the biggest benefit of having a career coach. Your capabilities go beyond what you learned in early days of your job or in last role that you served, which you may not realize it .
  2. A career coach helps to identify your inner strengths, untapped talents and uniqueness in you, which makes you even more unique.
  3. Yes this is all possible, but as mentioned earlier , your career coach has to be well trained and experienced like a therapist whose role is to initiate you to a state of being more hopeful and unleash new energy & confidence to achieve your objectives
  4. 4. You don’t have an interview winning RESUME

You have a great career with full of performance , rewards & education on your side, but if the same is not communicated well in your resume – its half job done.

If you want to compete in the fiercely competitive job market , you need to assess how your resume will be reviewed ( First by the recruiter)  and then by the hiring manager.

An experienced Career coach can help you to get better insights to reflect and communicate that many employers will ever see, which would be strong enough to get an interview call

Some people will tell , that you can do it all by yourself . A few will tell you that there is something wrong with you if you cant pull it off by yourself. And very often you may feel internally that you don’t need anyone’s help in the first place.

But if any of the above scenarios is matching yours, then think about it again .

Know your own capabilities , your limitations and plan accordingly .

Look for a certified and experienced coach , if you think you deserve one.
