Why our resolutions get Diluted?
Achieve More , Earn More and Grow More – these are three most common New Year themes of most of the organization in the kick-off meetings . The entire organization comes together to celebrate the last year achievements and plan for the next year and that sets up the tone for the new year for all employees.
Employees enjoy the camaraderie , feel motivated and energized by the energy , enthusiasm and excitement built up in the kick off meetings which generally happens 2 to 3 days at a stretch in the best venue ( generally 5 star hotels/ resorts) .
I attended my first Kick-Off way back in the year 2002 and that was the first time that any such event happened in the history of the company in which all employees , from all functions were under one roof and committed towards progress of the organization.
Sales Target Setting Exercise
After all the gala party and strategy roll out sessions on Day -1 , We were all made to sit with our teams next day and Sales Target setting exercise was done by asking for projections from each team
With sheer number exercise on excel sheet by correlating Market potential , Customer base and last year sales numbers , all teams came up with numbers which were much higher than expected. Like a mass movement involving all the employees together, motivation is more to follow the crowd than to seriously work on personal change. And willingly the teams accepted the targets after small round of negotiation.
Resolutions made during these meetings become an act of compliance , rather than commitment.
So we all left with a great positive note to go back to our respective performing zones and carry forward the great beginning to make new inroad.
Sooner than later , I started realizing that just setting up the team in kick off meetings and having a loud cheer of making commitments is just half job done. When rubber met the road in terms of day to day pressure , problems , deliverables , the aspirations gets diluted . People begin to compromise and settle for lower standards, the 200% became `175% and then 150%..... and so on and When I used to follow up on their commitments, teams started feeling discouraged . Some of them even felt that its too much for them to handle and expressing their inability to cope up with.
Why It Happens
Entropy, means gradual wearing out and breaking down of everything – a universal law. Likewise a new idea or a new plan is often faced with challenges and brings down the motivation even before the mission is completed. It takes constant effort to make sure that dilution doesn’t creep in. We all make Resolutions and Commitments to ourselves, but very few are consistent ?
Our mission gets diluted several times in a day. Faced with challenges there is always a pressure to reduce the original thought or plan to a mediocre one . The one who face such challenges in all adversities and do not dilute their original ideas are generally the one who reach the top spot… and those are the 20% of the employees of the organization!
That’s the reason there is plenty of data and research available that more than 80% will fail at accomplishing the objectives as decided , while only 20% will either achieve or surpass the desired objectives by the year end .
How I Combat Dilution?
I personally follow one of the key principle to combat dilution , first its Aspiration then people around it and finally , about ideas. The most brilliant ideas fail because either people are not motivated enough or that they don’t buy your ideas or their aspirations are weak. So first work on Aspiration - Your desire , your reasons behind your resolutions .
First Thing First !
I follow the following to make my ASPIRATION to work for me ....
- “No compromise on the Aspiration.” And generally talk to myself
- “What’s in my control that I can do?” And then do it whole heartedly.
- “It has to be done . The only question is how to do it.”
- “One more time – every time . And its always just one more time till I get the breakthrough.” &
- “ Let me do more than what others do “
So When you face difficulties like this ask yourself “What’s the right thing to do? What does it take a character to do?” and often the character means persisting in the face of almost impossible task..
More breakthroughs come from most passionate and rebellious people than from market studies or organizational objectives. It takes obsession to make the impossible happen. Such people take things personally and do something about it.
Don’t be in the category of people who believe “Chalta Hai” or it can be done “Later”
What you need is guidance and someone to hold you accountable for your actions every week.
